A great article online on the scooter situation in Italy
Martin Racing Performance &bull Nov 30, 2011
A month after the closing of Malaguti this article just popped up online. I used Google Translate to put it up in English below. To correct a couple things from the story that are lost in translation. The title refers to the Good morning Vietnam phrase from the Robin Williams movie, but also to the Malaguti Vietnam 50 or Saigon 50 as it was referred. From 2009 to 2010 the loss increased… Full Story »

The workers are the first to pay as we kill our manufacturing base
Martin Racing Performance &bull Oct 18, 2011
I didn't know what to call this blog entry maybe Italian manufacturing goes way of Dodo or how a lack of leadership caused this mess? It really comes down to the fact that the workers are the first to pay as we kill the manufacturing base in our industry. The Powersports manufacturing in America and in much of Europe has essentially been killed in the last decade. Many of these jobs have gone to Asia and will never come back. This video just got uploaded and it shows the death of a brand as a manufacturer. A company that lasted three… Full Story »

The investment voltures have come back, be careful if they call your store.
Martin Racing Performance &bull May 11, 2011
There's a lot people coming into the market for all the wrong reasons. I saw this in 2003, I saw this in 2008, and I'm seeing it again in 2011. Investors come out of nowhere, take up your time and sometimes claim they want to invest in your scooter store, distribution point, or import business and then they don't have the right amount of capital. They want to use someone else to put up the money to make the deal happen. Middle men. They are calling some of my dealers now. Some want to build a nationwide or statewide alliance… Full Story »

How a $100 million dollar company ends up broke
Martin Racing Performance &bull Apr 29, 2011
Dow Jones is finally reporting on the situation at Malaguti this morning. None of the US distributors have the cash to help re-start the brand. I gave the ex-employees at Malaguti and the Regione Emilia Romagna the contact info for the one company that might buy the 6,000 scooters they have sitting in a warehouse and nobody has done anything. The venture capital people looking at this couldn't get a phone call back so I've pretty much just decided to step away and let the Italian government handle it. I say I have a… Full Story »

Protests in Italy to keep production open at Malaguti
Martin Racing Performance &bull Apr 23, 2011
This whole thing makes me extremely sad. I wish everyone the best out there and that they can convince the powers that be to give the investors the incentives to keep the factory open and for Malaguti Moto to come under new management. Some of these workers have put 30 years into the factory. I would go as far to say they love the scooters, some of… Full Story »

MIC gets named checked in new Scooter Sales Articles
Martin Racing Performance &bull Mar 24, 2011
I just saw this figure again in an article from the Houston Chronicle from the MIC.http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/business/7479413.html The funny thing is I mentioned this at Dealer Expo at our seminar this year how the numbers don't add up the least bit. It was a great moment at the show when I basically put it out there, I never reported to the MIC any of the 10,000 units I imported between 2000-2005. My father never reported any of the vehicles he imported estimated between 4,000 and… Full Story »
