Stories from A Scooter in Turkey

  1. Rune & Galina's Anniversary

    A Scooter in Turkey &bull Aug 20, 2011

It was their seventh anniversary, so there were lots of jokes about the Seven Year Itch. Then Francoise told us about this match-making site she'd found where there were lots of South Africans "and rich, man! A lot of them have yachts, big… Full Story »

  2. The Polski Trambesh Moto-Rock Fest

    A Scooter in Turkey &bull Jul 31, 2011

This weekend sees Moto Club Bulgaria's second annual Moto-Rock Fest, at the bigger lido in Trambesh. Rune and I went along to take a look. The police were out in force, both at the junction on the Ruse-Turnovo road and… Full Story »

  3. A Rude Awakening

    A Scooter in Turkey &bull Jul 8, 2011

I blame Rune. Nikolai is going back to Norway next week, and he's fitting the porch and outdoor seating roofing. The firm in Sofia has none in stock, and Praktiker had two sheets in Turnovo and three sheets in Ruse, and no plans to… Full Story »

  4. The Johann Hari Interview: John McClane

    A Scooter in Turkey &bull Jul 1, 2011

Civilisation! I ordered a new hard drive from Amazon in England on the 28th June. They estimated delivery between the 8th and 14th July. OK, I thought, I'll have to wait. Mrs Krasimir brought it round at 7.30 this morning! Excellent! The storks have got their chicks now, but unfortunately those near the house have yet to provide me with a decent photo. I've got major problems with XP. It gets as far as the Loading Windows screen with the blue blobs running and it just stays there. It can stay like that for days if I let it. Doha… Full Story »

  5. Ian's Birthday Boat Trip

    A Scooter in Turkey &bull Jun 19, 2011

Ian and Jennifer joined us on the Moby Dick 1. Jennifer said, it's Ian's birthday in a couple of days. He wanted to do a speedboat trip, but when we asked at the water sports centre they wanted 200TL, they… Full Story »

  6. The Lycian Way

    A Scooter in Turkey &bull Jun 17, 2011

I got worried when I saw the neighbours' cars filled with water bottles. They'd obviously been up into the hills to stock up at the springs. Sure enough, when I got back to the house the water was off again.… Full Story »

  7. Magical

    A Scooter in Turkey &bull Jun 14, 2011

Mrs McClane's back in England. Did you have a good time? I asked as I drove her to the airport. Magical, she said. So it's thanks to the South Bucks, the Goodbye Girls, Chris and Stephen, Mr & Mrs P,… Full Story »

  8. Octavia Fail 3

    A Scooter in Turkey &bull Apr 13, 2011

The Skoda still hasn't been fixed. I thought this morning, wait a minute, this is England, they speak English here. You don't have to point to your watch and then look questioningly at them to find out when the work's going to be finished, when the car's likely to be ready. You can go and ask. I went to… Full Story »

  9. Octavia Fail 2

    A Scooter in Turkey &bull Apr 12, 2011

The man at koda said to the local mechanic, ignore the handbook, it doesn't work. There've been so many downloads to the ECU on the car that most of the handbook doesn't apply. And, anyway, he'd never heard of anybody having a problem like this. You'll have to take it to a koda dealer. So a trailer truck arrived to take it to Chapmans in Pickering.… Full Story »

  10. From the Danube to the Esk

    A Scooter in Turkey &bull Apr 6, 2011

I nearly didn't go. I thought, I've got to get the lights fixed before I leave. At the mechanic's on Thursday they'd said, come back on Saturday, the car electrician will be here, he's the maestro. On Saturday, they said, he's not here, we'll take you to him. It turned out to be Marty, who'd already had a go at the job and failed. He failed again. I arrived with working headlamps and one tail lamp. I left with no lights at all. You'll have… Full Story »
